Isadore Lévy (1899-1989) est un peintre franco-américain au parcours fascinant. Né aux États-Unis, il part en France en 1920 après avoir remporté une prestigieuse bourse d’étude. Il s’intègre alors au bouillonnement artistique de l’École de Paris, exposant aux Salons des Indépendants, d’Automne et des Tuileries. Son style, d’abord influencé par l’académisme et le travail des maîtres italiens, évolue vers une peinture plus libre et lumineuse.
Dans les années 1930, il retourne aux États-Unis, où son travail se simplifie, adoptant des formes plus épurées et une palette plus audacieuse. De retour en France en 1950, il approfondit son exploration de la couleur et des textures, créant des œuvres où la lumière semble jaillir de la matière elle-même. Exposé à Paris, New York et au sein de galeries prestigieuses telles que Wildenstein et Vignon, son travail témoigne d’une constante recherche entre figuration et abstraction.
Une rétrospective majeure lui est consacrée en 1989, quelques mois avant sa disparition, suivie d’un hommage posthume à Maisons-Laffitte en 1990. Aujourd’hui, son œuvre continue de séduire par sa sensibilité et sa modernité intemporelle.
