ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Boris Kassianoff (1932-2016) was a Russian-born painter and ceramic artist who worked in Vallauris, one of the major centers of French postwar studio ceramics.
His work is particularly recognizable for its dark ceramic bodies, richly nuanced glazes and strongly graphic incised decoration. Botanical, animal and figurative subjects appear throughout his work, reflecting his sensitivity as a painter as well as his approach to ceramics.
A significant part of Kassianoff's ceramic production was left unsigned, which has sometimes resulted in his work being confused with that of fellow Vallauris potter Albert Thiry. Kassianoff's ceramics can nevertheless be distinguished by their substantial forms, highly textured surfaces and expressive engraved decoration.
