Le décor est directement dessiné et incisé dans la matière, puis animé de larges aplats d’émail noir qui contrastent avec le fond clair. Les personnages aux visages stylisés, le dessin libre et la construction très graphique de la scène sont pleinement représentatifs de l’univers singulier et poétique d’Eugène Fidler.

Biographie – Eugène Fidler
Eugène Fidler (1910-1990) est un peintre, collagiste et céramiste français étroitement associé à la grande période de la céramique de Vallauris. Né à Bălți en Bessarabie, il suit une formation artistique à Paris, notamment à l’École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts puis à l’Académie Julian.
Il commence à travailler la céramique dans les années 1940 avant de s’installer à Vallauris en 1952, au cœur de l’effervescence artistique qui fait alors de la ville l’un des principaux centres de la céramique moderne française. Il expose notamment au Nérolium et participe aux manifestations consacrées à la céramique d’art de Vallauris.
Son œuvre se caractérise par une grande liberté de création. Fidler travaille volontiers la terre à la plaque ou par modelage et expérimente les empreintes, les décors gravés, les émaux et différentes techniques de cuisson. Ses compositions figuratives sont reconnaissables à leurs personnages stylisés, leur graphisme spontané et un univers nourri de voyages, de souvenirs et d’une mythologie très personnelle.
Aujourd’hui, Eugène Fidler est considéré comme l’un des artistes représentatifs de l’âge d’or de la céramique de Vallauris, parallèlement à son important travail de peintre et de collagiste.

Beautiful glazed ceramic tile by Eugène Fidler (1910-1990) featuring a figurative composition of two seated figures, executed in the artist’s highly distinctive graphic style.
The design is drawn and incised directly into the ceramic surface and enhanced with broad areas of black glaze contrasting with the light background. The stylized faces, freely drawn lines and strong graphic construction of the composition are characteristic of Eugène Fidler’s distinctive and poetic artistic vocabulary.
The tile is presented in a natural wood frame, giving the work the appearance of a small ceramic painting. A hook on the reverse allows it to be hung directly on a wall.

Biography – Eugène Fidler
Eugène Fidler (1910-1990) was a French painter, collage artist and ceramicist closely associated with the major period of postwar ceramics in Vallauris. Born in Bălți, Bessarabia, he studied art in Paris, including at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian.
He began working with ceramics during the 1940s and settled in Vallauris in 1952, becoming part of the exceptional artistic community that transformed the town into one of the leading centers of modern French ceramics. His work was exhibited at the Nérolium and in important Vallauris ceramic exhibitions.
Fidler developed a highly independent approach to ceramics, often working with slabs and hand-built forms while experimenting with engraving, impressions, glazing and firing techniques. His figurative works are particularly recognizable for their stylized characters, spontaneous line work and imagery inspired by travel, memory and his own personal mythology.
Today, Eugène Fidler is recognized as one of the distinctive artists associated with the golden age of Vallauris ceramics, alongside his significant work as a painter and collage artist.
