Isadore Lévy (1899–1989) est un peintre franco-américain dont le parcours s’inscrit pleinement dans l’histoire de l’École de Paris. Né aux États-Unis, il s’installe en France en 1920 après l’obtention d’une bourse d’étude et fréquente rapidement les grands Salons parisiens (Indépendants, Automne, Tuileries).
Son œuvre évolue d’une formation classique nourrie par les maîtres italiens vers une peinture de plus en plus libre, où la couleur et la matière prennent un rôle central. Après un séjour aux États-Unis dans les années 1930, marqué par une simplification des formes et une palette plus affirmée, il revient en France en 1950 et développe un langage pictural personnel, à la frontière de la figuration et de l’abstraction.
Exposé à Paris et à New York, notamment dans des galeries de premier plan telles que Wildenstein ou Vignon, Isadore Lévy bénéficie d’une reconnaissance internationale. Une rétrospective majeure lui est consacrée en 1989, peu avant sa disparition, confirmant la place durable de son œuvre dans la peinture du XXe siècle.

Isadore Lévy (1899–1989) was a Franco-American painter whose career is firmly rooted in the history of the École de Paris. Born in the United States, he settled in France in 1920 after receiving a study grant and soon began exhibiting at the major Parisian Salons (Salon des Indépendants, Salon d’Automne, Salon des Tuileries).
His work evolved from a classical training influenced by the Italian masters toward an increasingly free approach to painting, in which color and material play a central role. After a stay in the United States during the 1930s—marked by a simplification of forms and a more assertive palette—he returned to France in 1950 and developed a highly personal pictorial language, positioned at the intersection of figuration and abstraction.
Exhibited in Paris and New York, notably in leading galleries such as Wildenstein and Vignon, Isadore Lévy achieved international recognition. A major retrospective was devoted to him in 1989, shortly before his death, confirming the lasting significance of his work within 20th-century painting.
