JULIETTE DEREL (1918-2007) – LARGE GLAZED EARTHENWARE VASE – VALLAURIS – 1950s
Beautiful wheel-thrown glazed earthenware vase by Juliette Derel, featuring an elegant elongated silhouette with a gently rounded lower body and a tall, slightly flared neck.
The piece is distinguished by its remarkable glaze, predominantly a deep blue ranging from cobalt to blue-gray, contrasted near the base by rich brown, orange and reddish tones. The throwing marks remain subtly visible beneath the glaze, giving the surface a lively and highly tactile appearance.
Signed underneath “Juliette Derel Rivier.” This signature is associated with works from Derel's Vallauris period during the 1950s, with documented examples dating from approximately 1953 through the latter part of the decade. Comité Juliette DEREL

About Juliette Derel:Born in 1918, Juliette Derel studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tours, where she developed an early interest in ceramics. She moved to Vallauris around 1950, initially working at the Grand Chêne pottery before establishing her own workshop in 1952. Jean Rivier later joined her, and their work formed part of the remarkable renewal of modern ceramics that took place in Vallauris during the 1950s. Over the following decades, Derel developed a highly individual vocabulary combining free forms, abstract decoration, textured and scarified surfaces, and an expressive use of colored glazes. She later continued her artistic research in Saint-Paul-de-Vence and Gréolières until her death in 2007. Comité Juliette DEREL

A particularly attractive example of French mid-century Vallauris ceramics, combining a strong sculptural silhouette with a superbly nuanced blue glaze. An excellent piece for a collection of French studio pottery, Vallauris ceramics or 20th-century design.
