Michel Carlin (1935-2023), beau plat creux en céramique signé au dos, de format rectangulaire aux angles arrondis, à décor d’un grand oiseau stylisé traité dans un esprit très libre. Le motif, tracé en réserve blanche et bleue sur un fond sombre, évoque de manière assez sensible l’univers de la colombe de la paix, avec une présence décorative forte et une vraie qualité de matière. L’aile, le bec et le dessin du corps occupent l’espace avec beaucoup d’énergie, tandis que l’aile externe du plat est animée de pastilles colorées qui renforcent encore son caractère graphique.
L’ensemble est très représentatif du travail personnel de Michel Carlin, dans cette tension entre liberté du geste, vigueur du trait et sens très construit de la surface. C’est une pièce qui fonctionne aussi bien comme céramique de collection que comme élément décoratif mural ou à poser.
État général : bon état d’ensemble. La pièce ne présente pas, à première vue, de fêle ni de casse. On relève de petites irrégularités de cuisson, de surface et d’émail, qui semblent bien inhérentes à la fabrication et au travail de l’artiste. Le crochet de suspension est intégré au revers. Il faut toutefois signaler que si l’on suspend le plat directement par ce crochet, le décor apparaît à l’envers. La pièce se prête donc plus naturellement à une présentation sur support, sauf à prévoir un système d’accrochage adapté.

Michel Carlin naît en 1935 à Chambéry. Son parcours est marqué très tôt par l’expérience de la guerre, puis par son passage à Paris dans les années 1950, où il fréquente l’Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Son œuvre se construit dans la durée, entre peinture, céramique et recherche plastique personnelle, avec une intensité singulière nourrie par l’histoire, la mémoire et la matière. À partir des années 1960, il développe un langage exigeant, d’abord dans des compositions épurées, puis dans une expression plus libre, où la figure réapparaît avec force. Proche de plusieurs artistes majeurs de son temps, actif notamment autour de Moly-Sabata, de Vallauris, puis dans le Var où il s’installe durablement, Michel Carlin a mené une œuvre indépendante, profondément habitée, aujourd’hui recherchée pour son authenticité et sa personnalité.

Michel Carlin (1935-2023), fine signed ceramic deep dish, rectangular in shape with rounded corners, decorated with a large stylized bird rendered in a very free and expressive manner. The motif, outlined in white and blue against a dark ground, strongly recalls the spirit of the peace dove, with both decorative strength and a rich, lively surface. The wing, beak and body are drawn with great energy, while the outer field is punctuated with colored circular accents that enhance the graphic impact of the piece.
This work is very characteristic of Michel Carlin’s personal language, balancing spontaneity of gesture, strength of line and a strong sense of composition. It works equally well as a collector’s ceramic piece or as a decorative object for wall display or shelf presentation.
Condition: overall good condition. No visible crack or break noted at first inspection. Minor firing, glaze and surface irregularities are present and appear consistent with the artist’s process and the handmade nature of the work. The hanging hook is built into the reverse. However, it should be noted that if the piece is hung directly from this hook, the bird motif appears upside down. It is therefore more naturally displayed on a stand unless a custom hanging solution is used.
