Rare plat en faïence stannifère de Roger Capron (1922-2006), réalisé à Vallauris vers 1958.
Cette pièce présente un très beau décor polychrome sur fond noir à l’encre de Chine, représentant un personnage stylisé dans un vocabulaire graphique particulièrement caractéristique des recherches de Roger Capron à la fin des années 1950.
Les tonalités jaune, vert, orange et blanc se détachent avec force sur le fond sombre et composent un décor libre, très graphique, à la fois primitif et résolument moderne. L’ensemble témoigne de la créativité de Capron durant l’une des périodes les plus recherchées de sa production à Vallauris.
Le plat est signé “CAPRON” sur la face avant et également signé au dos.
Cette pièce bénéficie par ailleurs d’un intérêt bibliographique particulièrement important : un modèle quasiment identique est reproduit dans la monographie de référence Roger Capron, céramiste de Pierre Staudenmeyer.
Le modèle est également reproduit dans l’ouvrage 70 ans d’expression céramique française, aux Éditions Les Livres de l’Îlot.
Cette double référence bibliographique constitue un élément particulièrement intéressant pour documenter et situer ce décor dans l’œuvre de Roger Capron.

Biographie – Roger Capron
Roger Capron (1922-2006) est l’une des grandes figures du renouveau de la céramique française d’après-guerre. Formé à l’École des Arts Appliqués de Paris, il s’installe à Vallauris en 1946, au moment où la ville devient l’un des principaux foyers de création céramique en France.
Avec Robert Picault et Jean Derval, il participe à l’aventure de l’atelier Callis avant de développer sa propre production. Durant les années 1950, Capron affirme un langage personnel associant formes simples, compositions graphiques, figures stylisées et recherches sur les décors et les émaux.
Son travail connaît rapidement une reconnaissance internationale et dépasse progressivement le domaine de la céramique pour s'étendre au mobilier, à la décoration et aux réalisations architecturales. Les créations de ses premières décennies à Vallauris occupent aujourd’hui une place importante dans les collections consacrées à la céramique française et au design du XXe siècle.

Roger Capron Vallauris Polychrome Ceramic Plate c.1958
Rare tin-glazed earthenware plate by Roger Capron (1922-2006), made in Vallauris, France, circa 1958.
The piece features a striking polychrome decoration over a black India ink ground, depicting a highly stylized figure characteristic of Roger Capron's graphic experimentation during the late 1950s.
Yellow, green, orange and white elements stand boldly against the deep black background, creating a free and highly graphic composition with both primitive and distinctly modern qualities. The piece is a fine example of Capron's creativity during one of the most sought-after periods of his Vallauris production.
The plate is signed “CAPRON” on the front and also signed on the reverse.
The piece is particularly interesting for collectors because of its important bibliographical documentation. An almost identical model is illustrated in Pierre Staudenmeyer's reference monograph Roger Capron, céramiste.
The model is also illustrated in the book 70 ans d’expression céramique française, published by Éditions Les Livres de l’Îlot.
These two published references provide valuable documentation for this particular design and help place it within Roger Capron's body of work from the late 1950s.

About Roger Capron
Roger Capron (1922-2006) was one of the major figures in the revival of postwar French ceramics. After studying at the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris, he moved to Vallauris in 1946, just as the town was becoming one of the leading centers of modern ceramic creation in France.
Alongside Robert Picault and Jean Derval, Capron participated in the Atelier Callis before developing his own production. During the 1950s, he established a highly recognizable artistic language combining simple forms, bold graphic compositions, stylized figures and experimentation with glazes and decorative techniques.
His work soon gained international recognition, and his creative practice later expanded beyond ceramics into furniture, interior decoration and architectural projects. Today, Capron's early Vallauris works are particularly sought after by collectors of French ceramics and 20th-century design.
