FRANCO CARDINALI (1926-1985) – « SOLEIL NOIR SUR LE RAVIN » – 1982
Importante et remarquable œuvre abstraite de Franco Cardinali, intitulée « Soleil noir sur le ravin », réalisée en 1982.
Huile, sable et caséine sur toile, cette composition de grand format est particulièrement représentative des recherches matiéristes développées par l’artiste dans la dernière partie de sa carrière. Cardinali construit ici une surface dense et fortement texturée, presque minérale, structurée par des aplats noirs, blancs, gris et des nuances orangées et terreuses.
Les superpositions de matière, reliefs, stries et effets de texture donnent à l’œuvre une véritable présence sculpturale. Le contraste entre les zones sombres et les couleurs chaudes confère à la composition beaucoup de profondeur et de force.
Signée et datée « Cardinali 1982 » en bas à droite.

Biographie – Franco Cardinali
Franco Cardinali (1926-1985) est un peintre et céramiste italien né à Rapallo. Formé aux Beaux-Arts de Rapallo, il s'installe en France au début des années 1950 et participe au mouvement artistique de l'après-guerre, exposant notamment aux côtés de peintres de la Deuxième École de Paris à la Galerie Charpentier en 1956 et 1957. Il expose ensuite en France comme à l'étranger, notamment à Rome, Londres, Bruxelles et New York. (ceramiquemagazine.com)
Installé à Vence, Cardinali fréquente plusieurs grandes personnalités de la vie artistique et littéraire de son époque, parmi lesquelles Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso et Jacques Prévert. Une exposition personnelle à Saint-Paul-de-Vence fut notamment accompagnée d'un texte de Jean Cocteau, tandis que Jacques Prévert présenta également son travail lors d'une exposition parisienne en 1963. Parallèlement à sa peinture, Cardinali joue un rôle important dans la céramique de Vallauris. Il travaille notamment entre 1950 et 1959 à l'atelier Cérenne, dont il devient l'un des principaux artistes, réalisant des créations aux formes et décors très personnels. (ceramiquemagazine.com)
À partir de la fin des années 1960, sa peinture s'éloigne progressivement de la figuration pour se concentrer sur une abstraction plus dépouillée et minérale. La matière devient alors un élément central de ses compositions, travaillée par accumulation, relief et texture. « Soleil noir sur le ravin », réalisée en 1982, appartient pleinement à cette période de maturité.

Important and highly expressive abstract work by Franco Cardinali, titled “Soleil noir sur le ravin” (“Black Sun over the Ravine”), created in 1982.
Executed in oil, sand and casein on canvas, this large-scale composition is highly representative of the artist's mature exploration of matter and texture. Cardinali builds a dense, almost mineral surface combining black, white and gray areas with warm orange and earthy tones.
Layers of material, raised surfaces, incised lines and textured passages give the painting an almost sculptural presence. The contrast between the dark areas and warmer tones creates remarkable depth and visual strength.
Signed and dated “Cardinali 1982” lower right.
Titled on the reverse: “Soleil noir sur le ravin.”

Very good overall condition. The intentionally thick and irregular surface is an integral part of the artist's technique and aesthetic.

Artwork without frame: 43.3 in wide x 35.4 in high / 110 x 90 cm.
New black-painted wooden frame, sober and particularly well suited to the work.
A label bearing the title is also present.
 
Biography – Franco Cardinali
Franco Cardinali (1926-1985) was an Italian painter and ceramic artist born in Rapallo. Trained at the Rapallo School of Fine Arts, he moved to France in the early 1950s and became involved in the vibrant post-war artistic scene, exhibiting alongside painters associated with the Second School of Paris, including at Galerie Charpentier in 1956 and 1957. His work was subsequently exhibited in France and internationally, including Rome, London, Brussels and New York. (ceramiquemagazine.com)
Based in Vence, Cardinali developed relationships with major figures of twentieth-century art and literature, including Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso and Jacques Prévert. A solo exhibition in Saint-Paul-de-Vence was accompanied by a text by Jean Cocteau, while Prévert also introduced Cardinali's work for a Paris exhibition in 1963. (askART)
Alongside painting, Cardinali played an important role in the Vallauris ceramic movement. From approximately 1950 to 1959 he worked with the Cérenne workshop, where he became one of its principal artists and developed highly distinctive ceramic forms and decorations. (ceramiquemagazine.com)
By the late 1960s his painting had gradually moved away from figuration toward a more restrained, mineral form of abstraction. Material itself became central to his work, explored through layering, relief and heavily textured surfaces. Created in 1982, “Soleil noir sur le ravin” is an excellent example of this mature period.
