Anita de Caro (1909-1998) – Composition, 1956Watercolor and ink on paper – Signed and dated
Beautiful original work on paper by Anita de Caro, executed in 1956, combining watercolor and ink in a delicate palette of pink, mauve, blue, gray and black.
The artist creates an urban composition somewhere between representation and abstraction. Architectural lines, perspective, energetic drawing and translucent areas of color overlap with remarkable lightness. The work is highly characteristic of Anita de Caro's artistic research during the 1950s, when urban landscapes, space and color played an important role in her gradual move toward abstraction.

About Anita de Caro
Born in New York in 1909 and deceased in Paris in 1998, Anita de Caro was a French-American painter, draftsman and printmaker associated with the post-war School of Paris.
She studied at the Art Students League in New York before continuing her artistic career in Europe and eventually settling in France. She was also connected with Stanley William Hayter's influential printmaking studio in Paris and married French engraver Roger Vieillard in 1939.
Her work gradually developed from figurative subjects toward a freer visual language in which architecture, urban landscapes, geometric forms and color dissolve into increasingly abstract compositions. Her works from the 1950s are particularly representative of this important transitional period.
Her work is represented in several French and international public collections.
