Provenance : Collection Pascal Marziano.

Description

Important tall blue-glazed ceramic soliflore vase by Jean Rivier (1915–2017), made in Vallauris, France, and signed underneath the base.

This exceptionally slender and elegant work features a remarkable deep-blue glaze with beautiful variations of turquoise, midnight blue and black. Its richly textured surface reveals the unique effects created during the firing process.

An historically documented work, illustrated in an original period photograph devoted to Jean Rivier's stoneware ceramics. The present vase is clearly identifiable as the second piece from the left. This is the actual vase illustrated in the photograph, not merely another example of the same design.

In the accompanying commentary, Jean Rivier explains that his stoneware pieces were wood-fired directly in the flame. He specifically describes the undecorated piece — the present vase — and the effects achieved through iron and titanium oxides, combined with ash deposits and the direct action of the flames.

This remarkable firsthand account by the artist provides valuable insight into the creation of the work and constitutes particularly significant historical documentation.

Despite its slender proportions and considerable height, the vase is perfectly stable.

Provenance: Pascal Marziano Collection.

Condition

Excellent condition.

The variations, speckling and irregularities in the glaze are inherent to the artist's firing techniques and form an integral part of the piece's aesthetic character.

Dimensions

  • Height: 38.5 cm / 15.16 in

  • Base diameter: approx. 8.5 cm / 3.35 in

About Jean Rivier (1915–2017)

Jean Rivier was an important figure in the revival of ceramic art in Vallauris during the second half of the 20th century. After studying ceramics in Aix-en-Provence, he settled in Vallauris in the early 1950s, where he notably worked alongside Juliette Derel.

His work is distinguished by personal experimentation with glazes, firing techniques and abstract graphic decoration. He developed a distinctive vocabulary of symbols inspired by electrical and electronic circuits, resulting in compositions sometimes described as "pasigraphies."

He also explored the unpredictable interaction between clay, metallic oxides, ash and flames, making wood firing an essential element of his artistic practice.

Illustrated in a period photograph and specifically described by the artist himself, this tall vase represents a particularly interesting example of Rivier's experimentation with material and firing techniques.
